On April 21, 2025, Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 following a severe stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure. The beloved pontiff died peacefully at his residence in the Vatican, Casa Santa Marta. His passing was officially announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church.
On April 26, 2025, more than 400,000 mourners gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pay their final respects. World leaders, including Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron, and Volodymyr Zelensky, attended the funeral. In keeping with Pope Francis’ wishes, the ceremony was simple yet powerful, celebrating his lifelong dedication to the poor, migrants, and the protection of the environment.
Fulfilling the wishes expressed in his spiritual will written in 2022, Pope Francis was laid to rest at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. His tomb, modest by design, bears only the inscription “Franciscus,” reflecting his deep humility and devotion to the Virgin Mary.
With Pope Francis’ passing, the Catholic Church enters a critical transitional phase. A conclave is scheduled between May 6 and May 11, 2025, to elect his successor. As the Church navigates internal challenges and demands for reform, the world watches closely to see who will guide it into a new era.
