Pope Francis’ Funeral: A Global Gathering of Mourning
On April 26, 2025, more than 400,000 mourners gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pay their final respects. Fulfilling the wishes expressed in his spiritual will written in 2022, Pope Francis was laid to rest at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. His tomb, modest by design, bears only the inscription “Franciscus,” reflecting his deep humility and devotion to the Virgin Mary.
